How it works

How does an access control system work?

Entry follows three steps, depending on the installed equipment.

01

Identify

A badge, PIN or intercom call initiates an entry request.

02

Authorize

The system checks permissions, or an occupant answers the visitor.

03

Release the door

The lock releases; a door operator may then open the door if one is installed.

Common first questions

Frequently asked questions about access control.

Do all the doors need replacing?

Not necessarily. Some existing doors can be adapted, depending on their condition and the compatibility of their frames, locks and hardware.

Can badges, intercoms and door buttons work together?

Yes, when the system is designed to coordinate them. Authorization, unlocking and powered opening must happen in the right order.

How much does an access control system cost?

Pricing depends on the number of doors, mechanical work, wiring, readers and software. Door operators and intercoms add their own requirements. A quote should separate equipment, installation and any recurring services.

What if visitors also need accessible entry?

Access control can work with an intercom, a push button or touchless switch, and a door operator. The right configuration depends on the building, door, users and applicable requirements; a site visit helps assess the whole entrance.

Is a subscription needed to manage access?

Not always. Some systems are managed on site; remote access or hosted services may have recurring fees. The quote should separate hardware, installation and services.

Can access control connect to alarms and cameras?

Some configurations can connect access control with an alarm system or with cameras. Check the available features and compatibility before planning shared management.
